Looking to get your feet wet in the world of fishing? This laid-back, full-day trip on Sabine Lake is tailor-made for newcomers and casual anglers alike. Spend 8 hours on the water with local expert Chris Horner, who'll show you the ropes and help you land your first big catch. Whether you're completely new to fishing or just want to brush up on your skills, this trip offers a perfect blend of education and hands-on experience. You'll be casting like a pro in no time, all while soaking in the beauty of Sabine Lake.
From the moment you step aboard, Captain Chris sets a relaxed, welcoming tone. This isn't about intense competition or rushing from spot to spot – it's all about learning at your own pace and enjoying the experience. You'll start with the basics: how to hold a rod, tie knots, and make your first cast. As the day progresses, Chris will introduce more advanced techniques, always making sure everyone's comfortable before moving on. The calm waters of Sabine Lake provide the perfect classroom, and with a max of 4 guests, you'll get plenty of one-on-one attention. By the end of the day, you'll have a solid grasp of fishing fundamentals and, with any luck, a cooler full of fish to show for it.
Don't sweat it if you can't tell a jig from a crankbait – Chris has got you covered with all the gear you'll need. You'll learn how to use spinning reels, baitcasters, and everything in between. The focus is on light tackle fishing, perfect for the species we're after. Chris will show you how to rig your line, bait your hook, and present your lure in a way that's irresistible to fish. You'll practice different retrieval techniques – the slow roll, the stop-and-go, maybe even a little topwater action if conditions are right. And of course, you'll master the art of setting the hook when you feel that telltale tug. It's all hands-on, and Chris is there every step of the way to offer tips and encouragement.
Sabine Lake is home to a trifecta of sought-after game fish: redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Each offers a unique challenge and a delicious reward if you're looking to take some home for dinner. Redfish, with their distinctive spot near the tail, are known for their strong fights and tendency to make drag-screaming runs. They love to hang out near structures and in the shallows, making them a blast to sight-fish for. Speckled trout, or "specks" as the locals call them, are abundant year-round and make for some of the best eating you'll find. They're often caught in schools, so when you find one, get ready for some fast action. Flounder might not look like much, but these flat fish are ambush predators with a mean streak. They're masters of camouflage and put up a surprising fight when hooked. Plus, there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of landing your first "doormat" flounder.
What sets this trip apart is its focus on education and building confidence. Chris isn't just there to put you on fish – he's there to turn you into an angler. You'll learn how to read the water, understand tides and how they affect fish behavior, and pick up on those little details that separate the rookies from the pros. But it's not all serious business – there's plenty of time for jokes, fish stories, and soaking in the natural beauty of Sabine Lake. By the end of the day, you won't just have memories of fish caught (though there should be plenty of those) – you'll have a new set of skills and a newfound appreciation for the sport of fishing.
While every day on the water is different, Sabine Lake has been particularly hot lately. Redfish have been schooling up in the shallows, providing some heart-pounding sight-fishing opportunities. The trout bite has been consistent, especially around the oyster reefs and drop-offs. And for those willing to put in the time, some real trophy flounder have been coming to the boat. Chris keeps a close eye on patterns and knows exactly where to find the fish, no matter the conditions. Whether you're dreaming of that bull red, a limit of specks, or your first-ever flounder, this trip gives you a great shot at making it happen.
If you've always wanted to try fishing but felt intimidated, or if you're looking to sharpen your skills in a low-pressure environment, this is the trip for you. Chris Horner and Phantom Charters have created something special here – a full day on the water that's as educational as it is fun. You'll come away with new skills, great memories, and probably a few fish stories of your own to tell. Spots are limited to ensure a personalized experience, so don't wait to book. Grab your sunscreen, your sense of adventure, and get ready for a day you won't forget on Sabine Lake. Who knows? This might just be the start of your new favorite hobby. See you on the water!
Lake trout are cold-water fish that thrive in deep, oxygen-rich lakes. They're typically 24-36 inches long but can reach over 40 pounds. You'll find them suspended in the middle of deep basins, especially in cooler months. These fish are slow-growing and prefer low light, so overcast days are prime time. Anglers love lake trout for their size and the challenge of deep-water fishing. They put up a good fight and make excellent table fare. When targeting them, focus on jigging techniques. I've had great luck using large soft plastics that mimic injured baitfish. Work them slowly near the bottom in 50-100 feet of water. Remember, lake trout are sensitive to pressure changes, so reel them up slowly if you're planning to release them.

Redfish are a blast to catch in Sabine Lake. Most run 20-30 inches, but they can get much bigger. Look for them in shallow water, 1-4 feet deep, around oyster reefs and grass flats. They love hanging out near structure, so check out old pilings and jetties too. Fall is prime time when they're fattening up for winter. Anglers go crazy for redfish because of their hard-fighting nature and that distinctive tail spot. They're also delicious on the grill. To land one, try working a gold spoon or soft plastic shrimp imitation along the bottom. My local trick? When you see their backs breaking the surface (we call it "tailing"), cast well ahead and drag your lure right into their path. Be ready for an explosive strike!

Southern flounder are ambush predators that lie flat on the bottom, waiting to pounce. They typically run 15-18 inches but can reach over 20 pounds. You'll find them in sandy or muddy areas of Sabine Lake, often near drop-offs or structure. Fall is the best time to target them as they move to deeper water. Anglers love flounder for their unique appearance and excellent taste. They can be tricky to hook, but that's part of the fun. To catch one, try drift fishing with a live bull minnow or mullet on a Carolina rig. Here's a tip: when you feel a bite, don't set the hook right away. Give the flounder time to turn the bait in its mouth. Count to three, then reel down and lift. It's a technique that takes practice, but it'll boost your catch rate.
